There is news going around that Google plans to release a new web browser, be it a publicity stunt or a way to compete with other big search engine companies, something is definitely up. With Google Inc. having recently registered the domain name gbrowser.com and hiring four key people that worked on Microsoft’s web browser, there is no doubt that there is a solid case towards a Google browser being under development.

If you look at the possibility of an upcoming “Gbrowser” from Microsoft’s perspective, I believe they should be concerned. The latest version of Mozilla Firefox was downloaded over 1 million times within 100 hours of its launch, that’s 10,000 downloads an hour! More and more people are turning to Mozilla for a web browser, but would they move to a Google browser? I asked Daniel Barrow, an avid FireFox user, he believes that there is room for complete success with Google’s upcoming web browser, but also room for absolute failure, “With Windows Longhorn being released in the near future, Microsoft definitely have an edge to market not only their own web browser, but also their search engine, for all we know this could be the end of Google altogether, however that may seem rather farfetched.”

Google’s most recent phenomena, Gmail, has proved to be a great success so far, while still in its BETA stages. Thousands of people fought for Gmail invitations, many even paid, it is possible that Google could introduce a similar system to their web browser, however, this would most probably prove to be more difficult that with a web based email client. With millions of software crackers around, you can almost guarantee that there will at least be an attempt to crack any form of invitation serial codes that the software may have implemented.

Talk of Gbrowser is spreading rapidly, it is believed that Gbrowser could be released, even if only for BETA stages, within the upcoming week, I say buckle your seatbelts and get prepared to surf the web.

In my humble opinion, while Google is very impressive as a search engine the other products offered by google are very unipressive. It does not make very much sense to introduce another vapor-ware story to the public when Gmail is still not a finished product. It seems to me that Yahoo! is implementing Google's vaporware and doing a very good job of it.

Google as a company needs to stick to it's core product and if Google R&D does have a hot innovative idea do not tip your hand to the competition unless ready to implement. If they continue down this path I predict Yahoo! and Microsoft will squeeze them out of business within 2 years.

From what little I've read on web browsers lately it appears that Microsoft will be charging (in the region of $100) for new versions of internet explorer acquired outside of the lastest windows OS, claiming IE is a part of WindowsOS. I therfore think that any browser lauched that is both free and functional is a good thing (viz FireFox, opera, etc). If google do it well then IE will soon become redundant. If not, then it's only a matter of time before IE quietly leaves the room.

A further thought:

Would a google bowser show ads (context sensitive ones, no doubt)? Do you think one would have to pay to get a browser that did not show ads?

Remember: Ads consume bandwidth

Firefox is really great value and apart from a few websites that it cannot run perfectly on, I have nothing to say against it.... Now is there room for a Google browser? Why not? Google search engine is the best, I have a gmail account and it reallly really really rocks, Picasa released free by Google is incredible.... Only thing missing is a browser and a msn-like..... God I would paint my computer in Google colors if I could.
