What is a Meme?

The first known lol cat meme from 1870Online backup service Mozy shows us what a meme is and where they originated in one of the largest infographics you will see.  So where did the word meme originate?  The Greek of course, a shortend version of the Greek word “mimeme,” meaning “imitated thing.

Dating back to the 1870’s where American Photographer Harry Whittier enjoyed taking pictures of cats in funny poses and added captions to those pictures.  Meme’s really didn’t take off until the early 2000’s when Christopher Poole the found of 4chan  pushed it into full swing.
